Liar, liar pants on fire

So I'm feeling a tad guilty this evening. Today I told a lie and it's rankling with me!

To set the scene, back in September I bought a shiny new toy in the form of a Canon 40d camera. I bought it a week after it was released and paid around £100 more than I would have done had I waited. Sadly the saying "a fool and his money" is never truer when it comes to me. The reason I took the plunge so early was that Jessops were offering the camera plus 3 year warranty and accidental damage (a week after me buying it this was reduced to just 12 months). Paying so much for a camera I'm still glad I bought it when I did as the extra 2 years will give me good piece of mind.

So anyways, a month into owning it I notice a large speck of dirt on the inside of the fresnel screen (the bit where the focus points are shown). Whilst this didn't affect the picture quality, it was damn annoying. So being the idiot I am, I tried to clean it. First I tried blowing, then shaking and then - and I shudder at the memory - I tried a pair of tweasers to remove the dirt. The end result was the dirt remained and I scratched the lens.

Me = idiot.

So I take it into Jessops and explain there was some dirt etc and wanted it cleaned. The boxed it up and sent it off. 7 weeks later and I'm still waiting, so I phone them up. Jessops give me the number of the service centre and I call them up. A lady answered and I gave her my repair number. I knew something was up when she put me on hold for so long. When she spoke again she explained that the damage wasn't covered by the warranty and I would have to pay to get it repaired. Now usually I would be too shy to argue and accept this, but I was pissed off at having taken 2 hours to get into work (Junction 13 was shut :( ), so I snapped back that it had been like that when I bought it and I wasn't going to pay for the repair. She put me on hold again and then came back to ask what had happened. Here, dear reader, was were I sank into the murky pits of the lie. I explained that the Camera had it when I first bought it, however I had to wait 2 weeks for my insurance documents to arrive (technically true) before returning it. I also explained how the guys in the shop were going to just swap it for another, before remembering they couldn't because my warranty was tied to the serial number of the camera (also true). She put me on hold again as she said she would escalate it.

Five minutes later she returned to tell me that they would cover the cost and start working on the fix. I put the phone down and checked myself into Liarsville, population 1. Damn my Catholic guilt!

My karma will mean that I don't get the camera before Christmas like I hoped I would. I'm slightly annoyed that they hadn't even contacted me in the 7 weeks they have had the camera to explain that there was a problem, but meh.

Ps isn't this the cutest thing you have ever seen:

Hmmm actually maybe this little fella beats it:
